Obtaining Free Divorce Records

There are many situations wherein divorce records are useful or needed, such as when:

 

• you're a party of the divorce and you need a copy of the document for record keeping

• you need to confirm if a person is divorced

• you need to find out an individual's previous criminal history

• you're researching your genealogy and need information on a member of your family

 

Where to Obtain Divorce Records

 

Since divorce records are legal documents kept in county courts,

these documents are public records. Public records can be accessed by anyone.

 

Can you request divorce records for free? Yes and no. While divorce records are essentially court records, they aren't always available to the general public. Moreover, they aren't always free.

 

Divorce records typically contain personal information that is extremely sensitive. Divorce records may contain the following on a person: income, criminal history, and private information that's been disclosed during divorce proceedings. In general, divorce records are released only to those who are

involved in the divorce and only when they supply proper identification. Although this may be the case, there are some states that release divorce records to anyone who makes a request to see them.

 

For more information on divorce records, go to http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w.htm. On this site, you'll find a list of state vital records offices, as well as information on how you can get started on your search and pay for it (if there are charges).

 

Online Services Offering Free Divorce Records

 

You may prefer to use a company to help you in obtaining divorce records. You'll find many sites that say you can order free divorce records through them. Beware of such sites, however; most of the sites promoting free divorce records merely perform searches. If they find the divorce records you need, you need to pay before accessing the information contained in the records. The "free" in free divorce records are actually for searching for divorce records, not for giving you access to the records.

 

Then there are sites advertising free divorce records or other public records and these sites only offer limited information. For instance, they may simply provide you with a confirmation a divorce record exists in a specific county for the individual specify in your search. In some cases, this information may be enough. If you need more information, then you'll have to pay a fee.

 

You'll find a number of sites offering free genealogy records searches. There are some that even provide divorce records. Archives.com, for instance, has a free 7-day trial that lets you access more than one billion records from all 50 states in the country. You pay the fee only when you decide you want to use Archives.com for your genealogy searches. Once a paid member, you'll be able to save, maintain, and review searches and records.
