Locating Divorce Records

There are a variety of purposes that may be served with the information found in divorce records. If you have enough information available, you can search for divorce records of your own or through a third party. A common application is genealogical research.

 

Divorce Records are Usually Located in a County Courthouse

 

Divorce records fall under the broader category of vital records. In most regions of the world, and particularly in the United States, such records are kept at a local government level.

 

In the United States, the county courthouse is usually the place

holding these records. So the county where the divorce was completed will be the county in which the record-holding county courthouse will be found.If you know which county this is, locating divorce records is a relatively simple process. You just appear in person and follow the prescribed method of obtaining records for that county courthouse. Most courthouses provide a method of obtaining these records online as well.

 

If the courthouse itself lacks an online presence, you may be able to get what you need through the state government records website. In most cases this can be found by entering the state name at your local search engine and looking for a site ending in “.gov”. The information available on the state

website may go beyond just helping you apply for the records. However, this information will vary greatly from one state to the next.

 

One thing all states do have in common is vital records agencies. This is an important service that state governments provide. You can contact these vital records agencies by phone for assistance, but you may get better service from their websites. You can find a list of these websites at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/w2w.htm.

 

Information You'll Need When Applying for Divorce Records

 

The county clerk or vital records search form will require some basic information in order to begin locating divorce records. If you have the divorce file number, the process will go rather quickly. The records can also be found using the names of the individuals who divorced. You may be required to state your reason for your divorce record request.

 

For newer divorce records, you may need to meet certain legal requirements to qualify to view the documents. State laws vary, but many are as strict as to require you to be one of the former spouses. In most states these records are public enough to at least confirm their existence.

 

Taking Your Search for Divorce Records Online

 

There are a variety of resources available for locating divorce records online. Many private companies have broad access to this information or specialize in finding this information. You can expect to pay a fee to use most of these services. You'll need the name of one of the former spouses to do the search.
